Exam Overview
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE): Complete Overview
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is a national-level engineering entrance assessment conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India. As of 2026, it remains the primary gateway for admission to prestigious undergraduate programs at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). Beyond direct admissions, it serves as the mandatory screening tier for JEE Advanced, the exclusive entrance for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Exam Description
Get familiar with the exam structure and focus areas.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) serves as a crucial assessment tool that Indian engineering aspirants must clear to demonstrate their readiness for university-level technical education. The examination is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and provides entry into India’s premier technical institutions. This guide presents all essential information related to the JEE examination system.
The Two-Tier Structure
The JEE follows a two-stage structure designed to evaluate students throughout their academic journey in technical education.
JEE Main
Conducted by the NTA, JEE Main is the primary entrance examination for admission into: NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Admissions to these institutions are directly based on JEE Main ranks.
JEE Advanced
Only the top approximately 2,50,000 qualifiers from JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. This examination is overseen by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) and conducted by seven zonal IITs. It is the sole gateway to admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
Exam Dates & Schedule (2026)
The NTA continues its two-session academic calendar to ensure smooth scheduling.
- Session 1 (January 2026): Currently ongoing and yet to conclude.
- Session 2 (April 2026): Registration will begin approximately two weeks after Session 1 ends (early February 2026).
- Admit Cards: Released three days before the candidate’s specific exam shift.
- Result Declaration: Session 1 results are expected in the second week of February.
Syllabus Overview
The syllabus is based on the NCERT Class 11 and 12 curriculum but demands a higher level of conceptual understanding.
- Physics: Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Thermodynamics, Modern Physics.
- Chemistry: Physical (numericals), Organic (mechanisms and reactions), Inorganic (properties and periodic trends).
- Mathematics: Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Algebra, Vectors, and 3D Geometry.
Ranking System: NTA Score vs. All India Rank
One of the most confusing aspects of the NTA system is the percentile-based ranking. Since the exam is conducted in multiple shifts with varying difficulty levels, a normalization process is applied.
- NTA Score (Percentile): Indicates the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or below you in that specific session. It is not a percentage of marks.
- All India Rank (AIR): Calculated using the candidate’s percentile across all sessions in a given year.
Registration and Sessions
JEE Main is generally conducted in two sessions — January and April.
- Candidates may appear in one or both sessions.
- If both sessions are attempted, the best NTA score is considered for ranking.
- Registration is completed online through the official NTA JEE portal with document upload and fee payment.
Strategic Preparation Tips
- NCERT is King: NCERT textbooks are indispensable, especially for Chemistry.
- Mock Tests: Regular practice in a computer-based testing environment is essential.
- Previous Year Questions (PYQs): Solving papers from the last 5–10 years is critical, as patterns tend to repeat.
What Happens After the Result?
After the final AIR is declared, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts centralized counseling. Candidates can choose preferred colleges and branches, and seats in IITs, NITs, and IIITs are allocated based on rank and availability.
Reversion to Standard Exam Pattern
- No optional questions will be provided; COVID-era relaxations are fully withdrawn for 2025–26.
- Section B: Earlier choice-based numericals are replaced by a fixed attempt format.
- Negative marking now applies to both Section A (MCQs) and Section B (Numericals).
The 75% Eligibility Rule
The 75% Criteria is fully enforced for the 2026 admission cycle. Candidates must score at least 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST candidates) to be eligible for IITs, NITs, and IIITs.
Alternatively, candidates may qualify by securing a Top 20 Percentile position in their respective Board examinations.
Aadhaar Authentication and Security Measures
To prevent impersonation, the NTA has introduced stricter identity verification protocols.
- Aadhaar Authentication: Preferred during registration. Non-Aadhaar candidates must report one hour early for manual verification.
- Biometrics: Thumb impressions and iris scans are mandatory at designated centers.
Tie-Breaking Policy Update
In cases where candidates receive identical NTA scores, ranking is determined using the following priority order:
- Mathematics score
- Physics score
- Chemistry score
- Ratio of correct to incorrect answers (fewer mistakes rank higher)
City Intimation Slip vs. Admit Card
- City Intimation Slip: Not an admit card; it only informs candidates of the exam city.
- Admit Card: Contains exact center address and shift timing, released close to the exam date.
Syllabus Streamlining
Candidates should strictly follow the reduced syllabus. Topics such as Environmental Chemistry, Mathematical Reasoning, and select transistor-related chapters were removed starting in 2024 to align with revised NCERT guidelines.
Pro Tip: Avoid spending time on deleted chapters unless you are also preparing for state-level exams that still include them.
