Vacancy Status: SBI states that the advertised vacancies are provisional and can change according to the Bank's actual requirements. Candidates can apply for vacancies in one State/UT only, and merit is prepared State-wise and category-wise.
SBI Clerk Regular Vacancy 2026 Category-Wise
The 7,680 regular vacancies are distributed across the five principal reservation categories as follows:
| Category | Regular Vacancies |
|---|---|
| SC | 1,114 |
| ST | 837 |
| OBC | 1,716 |
| EWS | 760 |
| General | 3,253 |
| Total | 7,680 |
General-category vacancies form the largest portion of the regular recruitment, followed by OBC.
Remember: These vacancies should not be interpreted as one national competition pool. SBI Clerk recruitment is State/UT specific, so the vacancy count for the State and category selected by a candidate is more relevant than the national category total.

Which State Has the Highest SBI Clerk Vacancy in 2026?
Maharashtra has the largest vacancy volume in the main SBI Clerk 2026 notification. It has 1,718 regular vacancies, the highest regular vacancy figure among all listed States.
When the backlog groups displayed against Maharashtra are also considered, the table represents 2,120 positions for the State.
Tamil Nadu follows with 1,410 regular vacancies, while Odisha has 1,100 regular vacancies.
Top 5 States by Regular SBI Clerk Vacancies
| Rank | State | Regular Vacancies |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Maharashtra | 1,718 |
| 2 | Tamil Nadu | 1,410 |
| 3 | Odisha | 1,100 |
| 4 | Karnataka | 760 |
| 5 | West Bengal | 555 |
Do not equate more vacancies with a lower cutoff. Candidate volume, paper difficulty, State-level competition and score distribution can all affect the eventual cutoff.
SBI Clerk Backlog Vacancy 2026 Explained
SBI's main notification does not show only one backlog column. It separately reports three different backlog groups.
| Backlog Type | Vacancies |
|---|---|
| SC/ST/OBC Backlog | 287 |
| PwBD Backlog | 355 |
| XS/DXS Backlog | 1,444 |
| Total Displayed Backlog | 2,086 |
The notification further states that the SC/ST/OBC backlog vacancies in the main recruitment are net of vacancies already advertised under the separate Special Recruitment Drive, Advertisement No. CRPD/CR/SPLDRIVE/2026-27/16.
This is the key reason candidates should not simply combine numbers from two SBI Clerk articles without checking which advertisement they belong to.
SBI Clerk Special Recruitment Drive 2026: 1,538 Vacancies
Before issuing the main Junior Associate recruitment, SBI also launched a dedicated Special Recruitment Drive for SC/ST/OBC Backlog Vacancies.

Are 9,766 and 1,538 Vacancies the Same Recruitment?
No. They belong to two separate SBI advertisements.
| Recruitment | Advertisement | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|
| SBI Clerk Regular/Main Recruitment 2026 | CRPD/CR/2026-27/17 | 9,766 |
| SBI Clerk SC/ST/OBC Special Backlog Drive 2026 | CRPD/CR/SPLDRIVE/2026-27/16 | 1,538 |
SBI's Careers page lists them separately and provides different notification and examination links for each.
For PraveshExam: These should be presented as SBI Clerk Regular/Main Recruitment 2026 and SBI Clerk SC/ST/OBC Special Backlog Drive 2026 rather than treating them as one application.
Why SBI Clerk Vacancies Are State-Wise
Candidates can apply for SBI Clerk vacancies in only one State or Union Territory under a recruitment project.
Candidature is considered only against vacancies in the State/UT selected by the candidate, and SBI prepares the merit list State-wise and category-wise.
This makes the State vacancy significantly more important than the all-India total.
For example, someone applying for Karnataka competes within the recruitment framework applicable to Karnataka rather than against every vacancy available in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu or Odisha.
SBI Clerk Local Language and Vacancy Choice
The selected State also determines the required local language.
| Example State | Local Language |
|---|---|
| Karnataka | Kannada |
| Tamil Nadu | Tamil |
| Maharashtra | Marathi |
| Odisha | Odia |
| Gujarat | Gujarati |
SBI requires candidates to be proficient in the opted local language in reading, writing, speaking and understanding.
Candidates who studied the language in Class 10 or 12 can be exempt from the separate language test; others who are provisionally selected must qualify the language test before joining.
State Selection Matters: Selecting a State purely because it has more vacancies is not a sensible strategy if the candidate cannot satisfy its language requirement.
Can SBI Clerk Vacancies Change?
Yes. SBI explicitly describes the advertised vacancies as provisional and states that they can vary depending on the Bank's actual requirement.
Candidates should therefore use the latest SBI Careers notification or corrigendum whenever the Bank publishes an update.
Publishing Tip: PraveshExam should display a visible “Last Verified” date beside the vacancy table so candidates and search systems can distinguish current information from older vacancy figures.
Can Candidates Apply for SBI Clerk in Multiple States?
No. Under the current notification, a candidate can apply for vacancies in one State/UT only and can appear only once under that recruitment project.
The candidate may take the examination from a notified examination centre elsewhere, but their candidature remains attached to the State/UT for which they applied.
Does SBI Clerk Have Inter-State Transfer?
For Junior Associates recruited under the main 2026 notification, SBI states that there is no provision for Inter-Circle or Inter-State transfer before completing five years of service.
After five years, the Bank may consider certain exceptional requests—such as specified compassionate or spouse-ground cases—according to its transfer policy at that time.
Career Location: State selection is relevant not only for examination competition and local-language eligibility but also for the candidate's initial career location.
Does More Vacancy Mean a Lower SBI Clerk Cutoff?
Not necessarily. The vacancy number is only one part of the cutoff equation.
A State with many vacancies may also attract many candidates.
Cutoffs can be affected by examination difficulty, candidate performance, number of applicants, category distribution and SBI's shortlisting methodology.
Avoid these assumptions:
- High vacancy = guaranteed low cutoff
- Low vacancy = impossible selection
The better use of vacancy data is to understand recruitment scale and State/category availability.
