IBPS Clerk Eligibility 2026: Age Limit & Qualification

Latest details for this resource.

What Is the IBPS Clerk Age Limit in 2026?

The standard IBPS Clerk / CSA age limit is 20 to 28 years as on 1 August 2026.

For candidates who do not receive an upper-age relaxation:

Earliest permitted date of birth: 2 August 1998

Latest permitted date of birth: 1 August 2006

Both dates are inclusive.

The age is calculated according to the notification's reference date—not the date of the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination or joining.

For example, a General-category candidate born on 2 August 1998 satisfies the upper boundary of the standard age condition.

A General-category candidate born on 1 August 1998 would ordinarily exceed the maximum age limit unless eligible for an applicable relaxation.

Similarly, a candidate born after 1 August 2006 would not satisfy the minimum-age requirement for this cycle.

IBPS Clerk Category-Wise Age Relaxation 2026

The notification provides upper-age concessions for specified categories.

Category Age Relaxation
General / EWS No standard relaxation
SC / ST 5 years
OBC – Non-Creamy Layer 3 years
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities 10 years
Ex-Servicemen / Disabled Ex-Servicemen Service period + prescribed concession, subject to notification conditions
Widows / Divorced Women / Legally Separated Women not remarried Up to prescribed category-specific upper age

For ex-servicemen, the current notification provides relaxation equal to the actual period of defence service plus three years, with special provisions for eligible disabled ex-servicemen belonging to SC/ST and an overall maximum-age condition.

For widows, divorced women and women legally separated from their husbands who have not remarried, the age concession extends up to:

  • 35 years — General/EWS
  • 38 years — OBC
  • 40 years — SC/ST

Cumulative Relaxation: Candidates claiming more than one type of relaxation should apply the cumulative-relaxation rules exactly as prescribed in the notification rather than simply adding every available concession.

IBPS Clerk Age Limit for General and EWS Candidates

General and EWS candidates ordinarily have a maximum age of 28 years under CRP CSA-XVI.

EWS reservation does not itself provide the three- or five-year upper-age relaxation available to OBC-NCL or SC/ST candidates.

Therefore, unless a candidate independently falls under another eligible relaxation provision, the standard DOB range applies:

2 August 1998 to 1 August 2006

IBPS Clerk Age Limit for OBC Candidates

OBC candidates belonging to the Non-Creamy Layer receive a three-year upper-age relaxation.

This effectively allows an eligible OBC-NCL candidate to be up to 31 years old, subject to the exact date-of-birth calculation and other notification requirements.

OBC-NCL Requirement: Merely belonging to an OBC community does not automatically establish eligibility for OBC-NCL reservation benefits in a central recruitment process. The required certificate and status must satisfy the applicable rules.

IBPS Clerk Age Limit for SC/ST Candidates

Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates receive five years of upper-age relaxation.

This extends the normal 28-year upper-age ceiling to an effective 33 years, subject to the exact eligibility conditions.

The minimum age remains 20 years. Age relaxation affects the upper limit; it does not lower the minimum age requirement.

IBPS Clerk Age Limit for PwBD Candidates

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities receive 10 years of upper-age relaxation, subject to the disability categories and documentation prescribed under the applicable rules.

Where a PwBD candidate also belongs to SC/ST or OBC-NCL, cumulative relaxation should be applied only according to the rules in the notification.

Candidates should avoid calculating eligibility by automatically adding every concession themselves.

IBPS Clerk Educational Qualification 2026

The minimum qualification for CRP CSA-XVI is:

A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.

The phrase “any discipline” means candidates do not need a specialised banking or commerce degree.

Candidates with recognised qualifications such as:

  • BA
  • BCom
  • BSc
  • BBA
  • BCA
  • BTech
  • BE
  • BPharm
  • BEd
  • Other recognised Bachelor's degrees

can satisfy the basic graduation requirement, provided all other conditions are met.

A commerce or finance background may help with some banking concepts, but it is not compulsory for eligibility.

What Is the Qualification Cut-Off for IBPS Clerk 2026?

For CRP CSA-XVI, educational qualification is reckoned as on 21 August 2026.

The notification states that the final result of the required educational qualification must have been declared on or before this date.

This date is particularly important because IBPS subsequently extended the application deadline.

Important Date CRP CSA-XVI
Extended Application Deadline 28 August 2026
Qualification Cut-off 21 August 2026

Do Not Confuse These Dates: The original online registration deadline was 21 August 2026. IBPS later extended registration and fee payment until 28 August 2026, but the corrigendum stated that all other terms and conditions remained unchanged. Candidates should not assume that the application extension automatically changed the graduation eligibility date.

Can Final-Year Students Apply for IBPS Clerk 2026?

A student in the final year of graduation could qualify only if the final result was declared on or before 21 August 2026 and the candidate could satisfy the notification's documentary requirements.

Simply appearing in the final examination before the deadline is not sufficient if the qualifying result had not been officially declared.

IBPS requires candidates to possess a valid mark sheet or degree certificate establishing graduation and to provide the graduation details during registration.

Example: A candidate whose final semester exam ended on 10 August but whose university declared the result on 25 August would not satisfy the 21 August qualification cut-off merely because the examinations had already been completed.

The result-declaration date is the critical factor.

Is There a Minimum Graduation Percentage for IBPS Clerk?

The current eligibility requirement does not prescribe a universal minimum graduation percentage such as 50% or 60%.

The requirement is a recognised graduation degree.

Candidates must nevertheless enter the percentage of marks obtained in graduation while completing the application.

If a university awards CGPA, OGPA or another grading format, the candidate should convert it according to the university's prescribed rules and supporting documentation.

Graduation is mandatory.

A fixed 50% or 60% eligibility threshold is not.

Is Computer Knowledge Mandatory for IBPS Clerk?

Yes. Computer literacy is mandatory for IBPS Clerk / CSA 2026.

The notification states that candidates should have operating and working knowledge of computer systems. This requirement can be established through a:

  • Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Computer Operations/Computer Language
  • Having studied Computer or Information Technology as a subject in High School, College or another recognised institute

This is an important difference from simply being comfortable using a smartphone or internet browser.

IBPS expects candidates to satisfy the prescribed computer-literacy condition through their educational or certification background.

Is a Computer Certificate Compulsory?

Not necessarily as a separate certificate.

A separate computer certificate is one way to meet the requirement, but it is not the only route.

If the candidate studied Computer or Information Technology as a subject during school, college or another recognised educational programme, that can satisfy the computer-literacy provision under the notification.

Candidates should check their educational documents before assuming that they must obtain an additional computer diploma.

Is Local Language Compulsory for IBPS Clerk?

Yes. Candidates applying for vacancies in a particular State or Union Territory must be proficient in the specified or opted local language of that State/UT.

Proficiency means being able to:

  • Read
  • Write
  • Speak
  • Understand

This requirement is particularly important in CSA recruitment because Customer Service Associates frequently work directly with branch customers.

State Selection Warning: A candidate should not select a State merely because it has a high number of vacancies without considering whether they satisfy the required language condition.

What Is the IBPS Clerk Local Language Proficiency Test?

The Local Language Proficiency Test, or LLPT, verifies whether a candidate can use the selected local language of the State/UT.

Under CRP CSA-XVI:

  • Candidates select one permitted local language for the State/UT.
  • Candidates who can produce a Class 10 or higher-level mark sheet/certificate showing that they studied the selected language are exempt from the LLPT.
  • Other candidates can be required to take the LLPT after qualifying Mains/provisional allotment but before joining.
  • The LLPT is qualifying in nature.
  • A candidate who fails the language test will not be offered appointment.

Important: Local-language eligibility is a genuine appointment requirement rather than an optional preference.

Do I Need the Local Language in Class 10?

Studying the applicable language at Class 10 level or above can provide exemption from the separate language test if the candidate can produce the required mark sheet or certificate.

However, not having studied the language in Class 10 does not automatically mean that a candidate can never be considered.

A candidate who is otherwise eligible may be required to prove proficiency through the LLPT.

The crucial requirement is ultimately the ability to satisfy the local-language condition prescribed for the selected State/UT.

Can I Apply for a State Whose Language I Do Not Know?

Candidates should not treat a different State as an easy vacancy option without understanding the language requirement.

The recruitment requires proficiency in the specified or selected language for the State/UT, and candidates who cannot establish the required educational proof may have to clear the LLPT.

Failure in the LLPT can result in the candidate not being offered appointment. Vacancy numbers should therefore never be considered independently of local-language eligibility.

Can a Candidate Apply for More Than One State?

CRP CSA-XVI is structured around a single State/UT choice.

Candidates should therefore evaluate the following factors together:

State Vacancy + Category Vacancy + Local Language + Bank Availability

Candidates should not treat all 11,403 reported vacancies as one national pool. This distinction is central to understanding IBPS Clerk recruitment.

IBPS Clerk Nationality Criteria

A candidate must satisfy one of the nationality/citizenship conditions prescribed by IBPS.

Eligible categories include:

  • A citizen of India
  • A subject of Nepal
  • A subject of Bhutan
  • Certain Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India
  • Certain persons of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India

Candidates falling under specified non-Indian citizen categories must have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Are Distance-Education Graduates Eligible?

The key issue is whether the degree and institution satisfy the recognition requirements prescribed by the notification.

IBPS requires graduation from a university recognised by the Government of India or an equivalent recognised qualification.

Therefore, candidates with distance or online qualifications should verify the recognition status applicable to their programme, institution and period of study rather than assuming eligibility solely from the mode of education.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed for IBPS Clerk?

CRP CSA-XVI does not prescribe a separate fixed numerical attempt limit such as three, four or six attempts.

Candidates can generally participate in future cycles as long as they continue to satisfy the eligibility requirements applicable to that year's recruitment, particularly:

  • Age
  • Graduation
  • Nationality
  • Computer literacy
  • Local language
  • Other notification conditions

In practice, the age limit becomes the main attempt-limiting factor for most candidates.

Is Work Experience Required for IBPS Clerk?

No previous banking work experience is prescribed as the normal educational eligibility requirement for Customer Service Associate recruitment.

Fresh graduates can apply if they satisfy the age, graduation, computer-literacy, local-language and other eligibility conditions.

Previous banking experience may be useful professionally, but it does not replace any stage of the IBPS selection process.

Special Educational Provision for Certain Ex-Servicemen

The notification also contains a specific educational provision for qualifying ex-servicemen.

Matriculate ex-servicemen who do not possess the normal civil graduation qualification may be eligible under the notification where they hold the prescribed Army Special Certificate of Education or corresponding Navy/Air Force certificate after the required period of service.

For CRP CSA-XVI, the relevant qualifying certificates were required to satisfy the notification's prescribed date conditions.

Candidates relying on this provision should read the exact notification conditions carefully rather than applying the standard graduate rule alone.

Does IBPS Clerk Require Good Credit History?

Candidates should also pay attention to appointment-related conditions beyond examination eligibility.

Recent IBPS CSA notifications include requirements connected with the candidate's credit history/financial standing, and participating banks can verify applicable conditions at the appointment stage.

Candidates with unresolved credit defaults or adverse financial records should therefore read the relevant credit-history clause in the detailed notification rather than assuming that examination qualification alone guarantees appointment.

The final employment decision remains subject to the participating bank's verification of all prescribed conditions.

Documents Candidates Should Keep Ready

Candidates should preserve documentation supporting every important statement made in the application.

These can include:

  • Proof of date of birth
  • Graduation mark sheets
  • Degree/provisional degree certificate
  • Class 10 certificate
  • Computer qualification evidence where applicable
  • Local-language educational proof
  • SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS certificates where applicable
  • PwBD certificate where applicable
  • Ex-servicemen documentation where applicable
  • Identity proof
  • Other certificates prescribed by IBPS or the allotted bank

Document Verification Tip: The names and personal information in the application should match the supporting records. A discrepancy that appears minor during online registration can become important during verification.

Common IBPS Clerk Eligibility Mistakes

  • Calculating age from the examination date instead of the official cut-off date of 1 August 2026.
  • Assuming that the extended application deadline of 28 August 2026 also extended the graduation cut-off.
  • Forgetting that the qualification date remained 21 August 2026.
  • Overlooking the computer-literacy requirement because graduation alone is assumed to be sufficient.
  • Choosing a State based only on vacancy numbers without checking the local-language requirements.
  • Assuming that passing Prelims or Mains means all eligibility conditions have already been verified.

Remember: Documentary and appointment-related scrutiny can still apply at later stages even after a candidate qualifies in the examinations.

IBPS Clerk Eligibility and Selection Process

Satisfying eligibility allows a candidate to participate in recruitment; it does not guarantee selection.

The current CRP CSA-XVI process includes:

Preliminary Examination → Main Examination → Local Language Proficiency requirement where applicable → Provisional Allotment / Appointment Formalities

There is no standard interview stage for IBPS Clerk/CSA.

Exam Stage Scheduled Date
Preliminary Examination 10 and 11 October 2026
Main Examination 27 December 2026

Once a candidate has confirmed eligibility, the next priority should be the IBPS Clerk Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026 and a structured preparation plan.
