What is IBPS PO?
IBPS PO is a National level Bank Recruitment Exam for the Probationary Officer/ Management Trainee cadre of Participating Public Sector Banks.
PO or Probationary Officer is an entry level officer trained in different areas of banking. Depending on the bank and posting, the role may include customer service, branch operations, deposits, loans, compliance, account management, business development and supervisory responsibilities.
IBPS only conducts the exam and assigns the successful candidates to the participating banks. Instead it follows the normal recruitment procedure and eligible candidates are eventually provisionally allotted to one of the participating banks as per the recruitment rules and vacancies reported by those banks.
Remember: IBPS conducts the recruitment process; the participating bank becomes the employer after allotment.
IBPS PO Vacancy 2026
The vacancy position has changed during the recruitment process. The recruitment had earlier announced 6,715 vacancies. The figure was later increased to 7,365 and the vacancy update dated 27 August 2026 increased the total to 7,565 indicative vacancies.

Candidates should check the complete notification before relying only on an eligibility summary because eligibility is verified during the recruitment process.
Educational Qualification
A candidate must possess a degree in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
This means IBPS PO is not restricted to commerce, banking or management graduates. Candidates with recognised degrees in arts, science, engineering, commerce and other disciplines can apply if they satisfy the notification requirements.
IBPS PO Age Limit
Minimum Age: 20 years
Maximum Age: 30 years
Age Reference Date: 1 July 2026
The prescribed age reference date for the 2026 recruitment is 1 July 2026, corresponding to candidates born not earlier than 2 July 1996 and not later than 1 July 2006, subject to applicable relaxation.
| Category | Upper-Age Relaxation |

| SC/ST | 5 years |
| OBC Non-Creamy Layer | 3 years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | 10 years |
| Other Eligible Categories | As prescribed in the official notification |
A detailed IBPS PO Eligibility Criteria page should explain nationality, educational qualification, age calculation, category-wise relaxation and document requirements separately.
IBPS PO Selection Process 2026
IBPS PO is not decided by a single written examination. Candidates move through the Preliminary Examination and Main Examination before later assessment stages.
The current recruitment process also provides for a Personality Test before the Common Interview for shortlisted candidates, followed by provisional allotment.
IBPS PO Selection Stages
- Preliminary Examination
- Main Examination
- Personality Test
- Common Interview
- Provisional Allotment
The Preliminary Examination primarily acts as the first screening stage. Performance in later stages becomes important for the final selection process. Candidates should therefore prepare for IBPS PO as a multi-stage recruitment process rather than concentrating only on clearing Prelims.
IBPS PO Exam Pattern 2026
The Preliminary Examination tests three core areas:
| Prelims Area | Focus |
|---|---|
| English Language | Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and usage |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Arithmetic and numerical problem solving |
| Reasoning Ability | Logical, analytical and puzzle-based reasoning |
The examination is conducted online and uses sectional timing.
The Main Examination significantly increases the level of competition and includes areas such as Reasoning, General/Economy/Banking/Digital/Financial Awareness, English Language and Data Analysis & Interpretation, along with a descriptive component.
IBPS PO Mains Pattern: The current pattern reports 170 objective questions carrying 200 marks, followed by a 25-mark descriptive test. The descriptive component covers Essay and Comprehension.
Candidates should use the detailed IBPS PO Syllabus and Exam Pattern page for complete section-wise marks, timings, topic lists and preparation priorities rather than depending only on this overview.
IBPS PO Syllabus 2026
The syllabus moves from speed-oriented fundamentals in Prelims to more analytical and banking-oriented questions in Mains.
Reasoning Ability
Reasoning preparation generally includes puzzles, seating arrangements, inequalities, syllogism, coding-decoding, logical reasoning and related topics.
Quantitative Aptitude and Data Analysis
Quantitative preparation includes arithmetic, simplification, approximation, number-based questions and data interpretation, while the Mains stage places greater emphasis on advanced Data Analysis and Interpretation.
English Language
English preparation requires a combination of reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary and contextual language usage.
General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness
This area becomes particularly important for Mains. Candidates should follow current banking developments, RBI-related developments, financial terminology and important national and economic events in addition to static banking knowledge.
A separate syllabus page is important for GEO as well as SEO because it allows each subject, section and topic to become a clearly understood entity instead of burying the entire syllabus inside one very long recruitment page.
IBPS PO Salary and Job Profile
The notified IBPS PO basic pay scale begins at ₹48,480 and progresses through the following scale:
₹48,480 – 2,000/7 – ₹62,480 – 2,340/2 – ₹67,160 – 2,680/7 – ₹85,920
Officers may also receive allowances and benefits according to the rules of the bank to which they are allotted.
Actual take-home salary can vary according to the bank, location of posting, applicable allowances, deductions and other service conditions, so one universal in-hand salary figure should not be treated as guaranteed.
The role also provides a career path into higher officer and managerial grades based on the promotion policies of the respective bank.
How to Prepare for IBPS PO 2026
A good IBPS PO preparation plan should treat speed, accuracy and question selection as separate skills.
Candidates beginning with Prelims preparation should first build reliable fundamentals in arithmetic, reasoning and English before attempting large numbers of full mock tests. Once the fundamentals are stable, timed sectional practice becomes useful for identifying which questions consume too much time.
For Mains, the preparation approach should change. Candidates need stronger puzzle and reasoning ability, higher-level data interpretation, regular reading practice and continuous banking/current-affairs preparation.
Mock Test Strategy: Mock tests are most useful when they are analysed rather than simply attempted. After every test, examine incorrect answers, unanswered questions, time-consuming questions and topics where accuracy repeatedly falls.
Previous-year questions also help identify recurring concepts and provide a more realistic understanding of IBPS-level difficulty.
The dedicated IBPS PO Preparation Strategy page should go further with a daily timetable, 30/60/90-day study plans, subject-wise strategies and mock-test schedules.
IBPS PO Application Fee
For the 2026 recruitment, the application fee/intimation charges were:
| Category | Application Fee |
|---|---|
| SC/ST/PwBD | ₹175 |
| All Other Candidates | ₹850 |
The charges were inclusive of GST, with applicable transaction charges borne separately by candidates.
Application Status: The application window for CRP PO/MT-XVI is now closed.
Why IBPS PO Remains an Important Banking Recruitment
IBPS PO gives graduates from a wide range of academic backgrounds an opportunity to enter the officer cadre of major public sector banks through a common national recruitment process.
What makes the examination different from many single-organisation recruitments is the number of participating institutions. A successful candidate is not competing for only one organisation's vacancies but is considered within a common allotment framework covering participating banks.
At the same time, the multi-stage examination demands more than short-term preparation. Candidates need numerical ability, reasoning speed, language competence, awareness of banking and economic developments and the ability to perform under strict sectional timing.
For this reason, candidates preparing seriously for IBPS PO should combine syllabus completion, previous-year questions, targeted practice and regular mock-test analysis.
