IBPS PO Eligibility 2026: Age Limit & Qualification
Latest details for this resource.
Candidates applying for IBPS PO 2026 must be graduates and normally be between 20 and 30 years of age as on 1 July 2026. The recruitment is being conducted under CRP PO/MT-XVI for Probationary Officer and Management Trainee positions in participating public sector banks.
For the standard age category, candidates must have been born not earlier than 2 July 1996 and not later than 1 July 2006, with both dates included. SC/ST, OBC Non-Creamy Layer, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities and eligible ex-servicemen receive upper-age relaxation according to the notification.
Educational Qualification: A candidate needs a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government. The qualifying result for the current recruitment must have been declared on or before 21 July 2026.

Important: Eligibility conditions should be checked independently of exam preparation. Clearing Prelims or Mains does not override an eligibility problem. Submitting an application does not itself establish that a candidate satisfies all eligibility conditions, and candidature can later be rejected if the candidate is found ineligible.
What Is the IBPS PO Age Limit in 2026?
The IBPS PO age limit is 20 to 30 years as on 1 July 2026 for candidates who are not entitled to an upper-age relaxation.
IBPS specifies the date-of-birth range rather than asking candidates to calculate their age from the examination date.
Earliest Eligible Date of Birth: 2 July 1996
Latest Eligible Date of Birth: 1 July 2006
Both dates are inclusive.
This is an important detail because age is not calculated on the date of Prelims, Mains or interview.
For example, a General-category candidate born on 1 July 2006 satisfies the lower-age boundary for this cycle. A candidate born after that date would fall below the prescribed minimum age as on the eligibility date.
Similarly, without an applicable relaxation, a candidate born before 2 July 1996 would exceed the standard upper-age limit.
IBPS PO Category-Wise Age Relaxation
IBPS provides relaxation in the upper age limit for specified categories.
| Category | Upper-Age Relaxation | Effective Upper Age* |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | No relaxation | 30 years |
| OBC – Non-Creamy Layer | 3 years | 33 years |
| SC / ST | 5 years | 35 years |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | 10 years | 40 years before applicable cumulative relaxation |
| Eligible Ex-Servicemen / Commissioned Officers | 5 years | Subject to notification conditions |
*The effective upper ages shown provide an easy understanding of the standard relaxation. Where more than one category applies, candidates must follow the notification's cumulative-relaxation rules rather than simply adding every possible relaxation.
For CRP PO/MT-XVI, the official eligibility information provides five years for SC/ST, three years for OBC Non-Creamy Layer, ten years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities and five years for eligible ex-servicemen/commissioned officers meeting the prescribed service conditions.
IBPS also specifies that SC/ST/OBC relaxation can be combined with only one of the other applicable relaxation categories under the relevant conditions.
IBPS PO Age Limit for General and EWS Candidates
For candidates applying under the General or EWS category, the standard maximum age is 30 years as on 1 July 2026.
EWS status provides reservation subject to the applicable Government of India rules, but it does not by itself provide an additional upper-age relaxation under the IBPS PO age table.
Therefore, General and EWS candidates should normally use the standard eligible birth range of 2 July 1996 to 1 July 2006 for CRP PO/MT-XVI.
IBPS PO Age Limit for OBC Candidates
Candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) category receive an upper-age relaxation of three years.
That takes the normal upper-age ceiling from 30 to 33 years, subject to satisfying the OBC-NCL requirements and producing the required supporting documents.
Important: The distinction between OBC and OBC Non-Creamy Layer is important. A candidate cannot assume that simply belonging to an OBC community automatically satisfies the reservation conditions for the recruitment.
Candidates claiming OBC-NCL benefits should ensure that their certificate and status comply with the requirements prescribed for central recruitment.
IBPS PO Age Limit for SC/ST Candidates
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates receive five years of upper-age relaxation.
This means the standard upper-age ceiling can extend from 30 to 35 years for an eligible SC/ST candidate.
The minimum age remains 20 years. Age relaxation changes the upper limit; it does not lower the minimum age requirement.
IBPS PO Age Limit for PwBD Candidates
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities receive 10 years of upper-age relaxation, subject to the disability and documentation requirements prescribed under the applicable rules.
IBPS also issued a separate notice for PwBD-category candidates on 7 August 2026 during the current CRP PO/MT-XVI cycle, so candidates in this category should check both the detailed notification and any subsequent PwBD-specific notice issued by IBPS.
Where a PwBD candidate also belongs to SC/ST or OBC-NCL, the notification's cumulative-relaxation provisions should be applied rather than treating all relaxations as automatically additive.
IBPS PO Educational Qualification 2026
Minimum Qualification: A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
The phrase “any discipline” is important. IBPS PO is not restricted to candidates with degrees in commerce, banking, economics or management.
Candidates with recognised degrees in fields such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Management, Computer Applications and other disciplines can apply if all other eligibility conditions are met.
A commerce background may provide familiarity with some financial concepts, but it is not an eligibility requirement.
Is There a Minimum Graduation Percentage for IBPS PO?
The current notification does not prescribe a specific minimum graduation percentage such as 50% or 60% as the basic degree requirement.
Candidates must nevertheless enter their graduation percentage during registration.
Where a university awards CGPA or OGPA, candidates are required to convert it to a percentage according to the university's prescribed conversion rules. The notification also describes how graduation percentage should be calculated from marks obtained across the applicable semesters or years.
Key Point: Candidates should not confuse the absence of a minimum percentage with the absence of a marks-reporting requirement. Graduation marks still need to be correctly stated and supported by academic records.
Can Final-Year Students Apply for IBPS PO 2026?
A final-year student can satisfy the current recruitment requirement only if the final graduation result was declared by the prescribed qualification cut-off date.
Qualification Cut-off Date: For CRP PO/MT-XVI, the qualifying graduation result must have been declared on or before 21 July 2026.
A candidate whose final examination was completed before 21 July but whose university declared the result after 21 July would not satisfy this particular cut-off merely because the examination had already been written.
The relevant factor is the declaration of the qualifying result according to the notification requirements.
Although IBPS later extended online registration from 21 July to 26 July 2026, the corrigendum stated that other terms and conditions of the detailed notification remained unchanged. The application extension therefore should not be interpreted as automatically changing the educational-qualification cut-off.
Is Distance Graduation Valid for IBPS PO?
The central question is whether the qualification and institution satisfy the recognition requirements stated in the IBPS notification.
The notification requires a degree from a university recognised by the Government of India or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
Candidates holding distance or other non-traditional qualifications should therefore verify the recognition status applicable to their university, programme and period of study rather than assuming eligibility solely from the mode of education.
IBPS PO Nationality and Citizenship Criteria
Eligibility is not limited exclusively to one citizenship situation, although most applicants will qualify as Indian citizens.
The notification framework permits a candidate who is a citizen of India, as well as specified subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, certain Tibetan refugees who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement, and specified persons of Indian origin who migrated from designated countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Candidates falling into specified non-Indian-citizen categories must have the required certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
Candidates relying on one of these provisions should read the notification wording carefully because citizenship eligibility can involve documentary conditions beyond simply residing in India.
Is Domicile Required for IBPS PO?
IBPS PO is a common recruitment process for officer positions across participating public sector banks and is not structured like a state-specific recruitment requiring candidates to compete only for vacancies in their home state.
Candidates should therefore distinguish IBPS PO from recruitment processes where state or UT preference directly determines the vacancy pool.
After selection and provisional allotment, posting and transfer are governed by the participating bank's rules and operational requirements.
Domicile Requirement: Candidates should be prepared for the possibility of being posted outside the city or state where they currently live.
How Many Attempts Are Allowed for IBPS PO?
The current CRP PO/MT-XVI notification does not specify a separate numerical attempt limit for IBPS PO.
In practical terms, candidates may continue appearing while they satisfy the applicable age, educational, nationality and other eligibility requirements.
Attempt Limit: There is no separately specified maximum number of attempts. For most candidates, age eligibility eventually becomes the main limiting factor.
For example, a General-category candidate can continue attempting IBPS PO in eligible recruitment cycles until exceeding the prescribed upper-age limit for that cycle.
Does Work Experience Matter for IBPS PO Eligibility?
Previous banking work experience is not listed as a basic requirement for the Probationary Officer/Management Trainee post under the current recruitment.
IBPS PO is designed as an officer-entry recruitment, and graduates from different academic and professional backgrounds can compete.
This allows fresh graduates as well as candidates with prior work experience to participate, provided they meet the other eligibility requirements.
Having banking experience may help a candidate understand some concepts, but it does not replace the examination and selection process.
Documents That Support IBPS PO Eligibility
Candidates should be prepared to establish the information entered in their application through appropriate documents during the stages prescribed by IBPS or the participating bank.
- Educational qualification records and graduation certificates
- Proof of date of birth
- Valid identity documents
- Category certificate, where applicable
- Disability certificate, where applicable
- Ex-servicemen or other eligibility certificates, where applicable
IBPS explicitly states that simply registering, appearing in the examinations or being shortlisted does not guarantee employment if the candidate does not ultimately satisfy the prescribed eligibility conditions.
Document Check: Make sure the name, date of birth, graduation details and category entered in the application agree with the supporting records.
Common IBPS PO Eligibility Mistakes
Many eligibility problems are caused not by difficult rules but by misunderstanding the relevant dates.
- Calculating age from the examination date instead of 1 July 2026.
- Assuming that completing a final-year examination is sufficient even when the result had not been declared by the 21 July 2026 qualification cut-off.
- Incorrectly converting CGPA or OGPA into percentage.
- Claiming a reserved category without documentation satisfying the applicable requirements.
- Assuming that clearing an examination stage means IBPS has already confirmed final eligibility.
The application remains subject to subsequent scrutiny. Checking these details before application is far easier than trying to resolve an eligibility discrepancy during document verification or allotment.
IBPS PO Eligibility and Selection Process
Meeting the eligibility conditions only permits a candidate to participate in the recruitment process; it does not determine selection.
The current recruitment proceeds through examination and subsequent assessment stages prescribed by IBPS.
IBPS PO 2026 Exam Schedule: For CRP PO/MT-XVI, the official calendar scheduled the Preliminary Examination for 22 and 23 August 2026 and the Main Examination for 4 October 2026.
Candidates who satisfy the eligibility requirements should therefore shift their attention to the IBPS PO Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026, followed by systematic mock-test and revision preparation.
The IBPS PO Preparation Strategy 2026 page can then be used to create a section-wise study plan for Prelims and Mains.
