RRB JE Eligibility 2025: B.Tech vs Diploma, Age Limit & Medical

Latest details for this resource.

The eligibility criteria for RRB JE are often confused with exams like SSC JE or GATE. Here is the simplified, no-confusion, “fine-print” version of who is actually eligible.

1. Educational Qualification

Golden Rule: You must have a Diploma (3 Years) OR a B.E./B.Tech Degree in the relevant engineering stream.
  • Final Year Students: NOT eligible. You must have your final mark sheet/certificate by Dec 10, 2025.
  • B.Sc Candidates: Eligible for CMA (must have Physics & Chemistry). Rare exceptions exist for B.Sc (Civil Engineering).

Stream Mapping (Very Important)

  • Civil Engineering (Diploma/Degree): Eligible for JE Civil, P-Way, Design, Works.
  • Mechanical / Electrical: Eligible for overlapping posts (Diesel Shed, Carriage & Wagon etc.).
  • CS / IT: Eligible for JE (IT), some S&T posts depending on notification.

2. Age Limit (As of Jan 1, 2026)

Railways offer higher age limits compared to many central exams.
  • General / EWS: 18 to 33 Years (sometimes relaxed to 36 in delayed cycles).
  • OBC–NCL: 18 to 36 Years.
  • SC / ST: 18 to 38 Years.

3. Medical Standards (The Silent Killer)

Warning: Many candidates clear the exam but fail the medical test. Vision standards are extremely strict.

A-3 Standard (Strictest)

Vision: 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (Power ≤ 2D).

Required for: Track Machine, P-Way, Works (Civil posts).

B-1 Standard

Vision: 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (Power ≤ 4D).

Required for: Mechanical/Electrical posts in workshops.

B-2 / C-1 Standard

Lower medical standards for non-safety posts like DMS.

Note: Candidates who have undergone Lasik surgery are disqualified for A-3 and B-1 medical categories.

Frequently Asked Questions

For A-3 posts (Track Machine, P-Way), NO. For B-1/C-1 posts (DMS, Workshop), Yes, provided your vision is stable and meets specific criteria.
Generally No, except for JE Civil (if B.Sc Civil) and CMA posts (B.Sc Physics/Chem).
