Master Weekly Highlights 🇮🇳 National Affairs The Kishau Multipurpose Project agreement was signed on 15 September by the participating states. The project envisages a 232.6-metre-high concrete gravity dam on the Tons River, with storage capacity of 1,562 million cubic metres. About 90% of the financial burden is to be borne by the Union Government and 10% by partner states. The project is expected to irrigate around 97,000 hectares and generate about 1,476 million units of clean hydropower. PM Vishwakarma completed three years on 17 September. The scheme had achieved its target of 30 lakh registered beneficiaries, while around 24.50 lakh beneficiaries had received Basic Skill Training. PM Vishwakarma was launched on 17 September 2023, covers 18 traditional trades and has an outlay of ₹13,000 crore for FY 2023–24 to FY 2027–28. 🌍 International Affairs The 18th BRICS Summit was held in New Delhi on 12–13 September under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Leaders adopted the BRICS New Delhi Declaration, reaffirming cooperation under the political-security, economic-financial and cultural/people-to-people pillars. On the sidelines, India and China discussed border peace, trade concerns, market access and people-to-people engagement; both sides reiterated the importance of a long-term approach to bilateral relations. India and Malaysia reviewed cooperation in trade, defence, semiconductors, digital economy, energy, fintech and education. Rural inflation was 5.23% and urban inflation 4.31%. Food inflation based on the Consumer Food Price Index was 5.95%. The current CPI series uses 2024=100 as its base. August 2026 WPI inflation stood at 9.92%, up from 9.78% in July. The WPI series uses 2022–23 as the base year. India’s combined merchandise and services exports during April–August 2026–27 were estimated at US$399.27 billion, up 15.55% year-on-year. Merchandise exports alone were US$215.91 billion. The Union Cabinet raised the EPFO mandatory wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per month, effective from 17 September 2026. This was the 5th edition, held under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.” Semicon 2.0, approved earlier in 2026, has an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore and focuses on six areas including chip design, materials and equipment, fabs, advanced packaging, R&D and talent. Around ₹1 lakh crore of investment commitments were reported under Semicon 2.0, with close to one lakh potential employment opportunities across the ecosystem. The indigenous SPROUT facility was inaugurated at BRIC-NIPGR, New Delhi, to accelerate research into climate-resilient crops. India marked the completion of its 2,800+ km Dedicated Freight Corridor, launched the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah, hosted the 7th Global Fintech Fest, strengthened economic engagement with Russia and ASEAN, advanced maritime cooperation with Sri Lanka and Malaysia, and announced that the Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 2026 will come into force on 1 October 2026. Master Weekly Highlights 🇮🇳 National Affairs The completion of the 2,800+ km Dedicated Freight Corridor was marked on 8 September. Development projects worth more than ₹35,000 crore were also inaugurated, dedicated or launched in Vadodara. The Union Cabinet approved five railway multitracking projects covering 17 districts in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. They will add about 540 km to the network at an estimated cost of ₹10,021 crore, with completion planned up to 2029–30. Another three railway multitracking projects covering 14 districts across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will add about 656 km, with an estimated cost of ₹10,783 crore. Cooperation priorities included food security, climate-resilient agriculture, AI and digital agriculture, resilient supply chains, soil health, bio-inputs and sustainable forestry. The next ministerial meeting is scheduled for 2028. India and Russia reiterated targets of US$100 billion in bilateral trade and US$50 billion in two-way investment by 2030 during INNOPROM India 2026 in New Delhi. The then-current bilateral-trade base was described as around US$60 billion. Ahmedabad became India’s third spoke airport under the International Aviation Hub Strategy after Varanasi and Amritsar. The new National Accounts series uses 2022–23 as the base year. On 2 September, Japan Credit Rating Agency, or JCR, upgraded India’s long-term foreign- and local-currency issuer ratings from BBB+ to A-, with a Stable outlook. The fourth week of August 2026 brought major exam-relevant developments in digital payments, rural banking, space technology, defence indigenisation, international cooperation, sports and governance. UPI completed a decade, Regional Rural Banks reported a record ₹10,176 crore net profit, India celebrated its third National Space Day, the new Khelo India Scheme 2026–31 received a ₹36,441 crore provision, and India advanced cooperation with Morocco, Seychelles, New Zealand and Vietnam. Master Weekly Highlights 🇮🇳 National Affairs India Post launched upgraded Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa mobile applications on 24 August and inaugurated 14 renovated Post Office buildings. The apps are intended to expand technology-enabled postal services and citizen access. The restructured PM SVANidhi Scheme completed one year on 27 August. Lending under the restructured scheme has been extended to 31 March 2030, with a target of benefiting 1.15 crore street vendors, including 50 lakh new beneficiaries. During the first year after restructuring, 21.86 lakh loans worth ₹6,294 crore were disbursed to 10.56 lakh new beneficiaries. Eligible vendors can also access a UPI-linked RuPay Credit Card with a limit up to ₹30,000. 🌍 International Affairs The 7th India–Morocco Joint Commission was held during the Indian ministerial visit of 24–25 August. The two countries agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade within five years; bilateral trade was around US$4 billion in 2025. India and Morocco agreed to create a Joint Working Group to examine bilateral trade and the feasibility of a Preferential Trade Agreement. An MoU on food safety was signed between Morocco’s ONSSA and India’s FSSAI, along with a Cultural Exchange Programme for 2026–2030. India and Seychelles held a high-level bilateral meeting on 25 August to expand cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture and the Blue Economy. Areas included mariculture, tuna fisheries, hatcheries, marine conservation, digital fisheries systems and the use of AI in harvest management. India reported fish production of 19.7 million tonnes and seafood exports valued at US$8.46 billion during the India-Seychelles discussions. 💰 Economy & Banking UPI completed 10 years during the week. In FY 2025–26, UPI processed more than 24,162 crore transactions worth around ₹314 lakh crore; its average daily transaction volume in 2026 was around 66 crore. July 2026 recorded UPI’s highest monthly volume at 2,366 crore transactions, worth ₹29.88 lakh crore. UPI was operational in 11 countries, and 741 banks were live on UPI as of July 2026. Regional Rural Banks recorded an all-time-high net profit of ₹10,176 crore in FY 2025–26, up from ₹6,820 crore a year earlier. Their combined business crossed ₹13.5 lakh crore. India had 28 RRBs, operating through 22,273 branches across 26 states and 3 Union Territories. Gross NPA declined to 5.3% and Net NPA to 2.1%. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana completed 12 years. As of 19 August, it had 59.09 crore accounts, including 32.92 crore women beneficiaries, with deposits of around ₹3.17 lakh crore. India’s Index of Industrial Production grew 6.7% in July 2026. Manufacturing grew 7.3%, while Electricity & Gas Supply grew 8.7%. A made-in-India camera chip was used on Chandrayaan-3, the Vikram processor is used in launch vehicles, and Aditya-L1 uses radiation-hardened ADC chips developed by SCL. CSIR-NAL unveiled three indigenous Micro and Small Gas Turbine Engines: NJ-05 with 5 kg thrust, NJ-50 with 50 kg thrust and NJ-100 with 100 kg thrust. India’s 80th Independence Day Sets New AI, Nuclear & Sports Targets as BRICS, Banking, Defence and Science Stay in Focus
The third week of August 2026 was packed with exam-relevant announcements and institutional developments. India’s 80th Independence Day brought new targets for AI skilling, nuclear power and women-led development; core industries grew 5.4% in July; India deepened engagement with Singapore and BRICS; the Navy received the indigenous anti-submarine vessel Mangrol; scientists unveiled the targeted cancer-drug candidate RK-251; and the National Sports Awards 2025 were announced. Master Weekly Highlights 🇮🇳 National Affairs India celebrated its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026. The celebrations also marked 150 years of Vande Mataram, which was rendered from the Red Fort as part of the ceremony. During the Independence Day address, a target was announced to train 1 crore youth in Artificial Intelligence skills within one year. A nationwide free online coaching network for competitive examinations was announced using Digital Public Infrastructure, teachers and available educational talent. India set a target of 100 GW nuclear-power capacity by 2047, with plans to start five new nuclear reactors within the current decade. The target for Lakhpati Didis was raised to 6 crore, after the earlier target of 3 crore was reported as surpassed. UIDAI reported completion of Mandatory Biometric Updates for more than 2 crore students through a school-based drive covering roughly 1.6 lakh schools. Mandatory Biometric Update for children aged 5–17 years was being provided free until 30 September 2026. Seven infrastructure projects worth ₹427.80 crore were inaugurated at Paradip Port, Odisha on 21 August. The port marked 18.5-metre deep-draft capability, while concession agreements worth ₹1,580.36 crore were witnessed for three mechanisation projects aimed at 100% berth mechanisation by 2030. 🌍 International Affairs The 4th India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable and 4th India-Singapore Business Roundtable were held in Singapore on 20 August. Cooperation focused on trade, investment, technology, fintech, infrastructure and agri-exports. Singapore was India’s largest source of FDI in FY 2025–26, with inflows of US$19.8 billion. Cumulative Singapore FDI into India between April 2000 and March 2026 stood at US$194.68 billion, or about 24.72% of total FDI inflows. India-Singapore bilateral trade stood at US$36.1 billion in FY 2025–26; Singapore remained India’s largest trading partner within ASEAN. The 12th BRICS Communications Ministers’ Meeting was held in Pune on 21 August under India’s BRICS Chairship. Its ICT-track theme was “Innovate, Cooperate and Transform — ICT for a Resilient Future.” The communications meeting highlighted sustainable ICT infrastructure, cybersecurity, digital skilling, Digital Public Infrastructure, AI, future networks, startups and entrepreneurship. 💰 Economy & Banking The PSB Confluence 2026 was held on 17–18 August, bringing together Public Sector Banks and Public Financial Institutions around seven strategic themes. The Finance Minister announced that a High-Powered Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat would be announced, while PSBs were asked to undertake a focused month-long youth campaign beginning 2 October 2026. India’s Index of Core Industries grew 5.4% year-on-year in July 2026. June’s final growth figure was revised to 6.0%. Major July growth rates included iron ore 29.5%, cement 13.1%, electricity 9.0%, coal 7.6%, steel 2.9% and refinery products 2.7%. Cumulative core-sector growth during April–July 2026 was 4.3%. A Qatar-India postal remittance service powered by UPI-linked PosTransfer became available through Qatar Post outlets, enabling money to be sent directly to UPI-enabled Indian bank accounts. The service involves Qatar Post, India Post, the Universal Postal Union interconnection platform and NPCI International Payments Limited. 🛡️ Defense & Security CYBER KUSHTI 2026 was launched on 15 August by NIELIT as a national cybersecurity and AI hackathon designed to test human judgement in cybersecurity assessment, rather than merely detection speed. Registration was opened until 10 September, with the competition structured as Akhada, Dangal and Kesari rounds; the final was scheduled for 9 October in New Delhi. Mangrol, the third of eight indigenously designed Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, was delivered to the Indian Navy on 21 August by Cochin Shipyard Limited. Mangrol has approximately 80% indigenous content and carries lightweight torpedoes, indigenous ASW rockets and shallow-water sonar systems. INS Sudarshini completed a port call at Ponta Delgada in the Azores on 16 August as part of Lokayan 2026, strengthening interaction with the Portuguese Navy. 🚀 Science & Technology Researchers from IASST and IIT Guwahati developed a “smart” anticancer drug candidate called RK-251. It is designed to activate primarily inside cancer cells in response to high levels of reactive oxygen species. RK-251 releases the anticancer compound NBDHEX after activation and showed strong preclinical activity against triple-negative breast cancer cells, with much lower effects on healthy cells; further research is required before human testing. NALCO inaugurated a first-of-its-kind indigenous pilot plant at its Research & Technology Centre in Bhubaneswar for processing fly ash and recovering value-added products and rare-earth elements. The pilot plant has a processing capacity of 50 kg per day and can recover materials including alumina, calcium silicate and rare-earth-enriched residue containing elements such as scandium. 🏆 Awards & Honours The National Sports Awards 2025 were announced on 18 August 2026. 17 sportspersons were selected for the regular Arjuna Award, including Tejaswin Shankar, Priyanka Goswami, Treesa Jolly, Pullela Gayatri Gopichand, Vidit Gujrathi, Divya Deshmukh, Lalremsiami and others. I. Arumainayagam of football was selected for the Arjuna Award Lifetime category. A nationwide sports talent hunt for children aged 5–15 years was announced on Independence Day to identify young athletes in villages, cities and schools and provide specialised training. At the 63rd Governing Body Meeting of the Sports Authority of India on 20 August, accelerated talent identification was discussed as part of efforts to build India’s athlete pool for the 2036 Olympics. 📅 Important Days & Themes India observed its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026. The celebrations commemorated 150 years of Vande Mataram and highlighted Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047. World Humanitarian Day was observed on 19 August. The UN’s 2026 campaign used #ActForHumanity, focusing on protection and accountability for attacks against humanitarian workers. World Humanitarian Day commemorates the 19 August 2003 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad, in which 22 humanitarian workers were killed. The UN observes the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism on 21 August. ⚖️ Polity & Governance The Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2027 began with the Viksit Bharat Quiz, open from 17 August to 30 September 2026. The programme seeks to provide a merit-based pathway for young Indians to contribute ideas on nation-building; its national dialogue is scheduled in New Delhi from 10–12 January 2027. Participants move through a quiz, essay challenge, district championships and State/UT rounds before the national programme. At a high-level meeting with Union Government Secretaries on 20 August, discussions covered infrastructure and connectivity, security and external affairs, and governance. The meeting also stressed data interoperability and combining AI with human judgement in government work. 🌿 Environment & Ecology The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting was held under India’s BRICS 2026 Chairship on 18 August. Four BRICS environmental knowledge compendiums were launched, covering sustainable lifestyles, integrated wildfire management, landscape-based greening, and Extended Producer Responsibility/circular-economy practices. The preceding BRICS Environment Working Group discussions were held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, with priorities including biodiversity, pollution, climate resilience, circular economy and sustainable development.
